2 Times When You Need to Flush Your Boat's Inboard Motor

If you enjoy going out on your boat as much as possible after warm weather arrives, you probably want to make sure that the vessel's inboard motor stays in optimal condition. One way of doing this is to flush it out with clean water. There are two times when flushing the motor is vital.

1.  Before the First Use after Winter Has Passed

One time when it is crucial to flush out your boat's motor is before its first use for the year. Ideally, before the cold months of winter set in, you flushed and emptied the motor of any freezable water and refilled it with antifreeze so that the casing would not bust when the temperatures dropped.

Once the threat of winter weather has passed and you are ready to get back out on the boat, the antifreeze should be flushed out along with any debris that has settled and mixed with it. You should then replace it with water.

Not only is antifreeze unnecessary in the summer months, but since you will be flushing it throughout the season, refilling it with antifreeze would get expensive. Also, since boat motors pull in and expel some water while in use, you risk contaminating the waterways with antifreeze, which is harmful to both the aquatic life and water supply in the area.

2.  After Taking the Boat Out into Salt Water

Another time when you need to flush your boat's inboard motor is after every trip out on any body of water that is salty. Whether you are going for a leisurely cruise out into a harbor or trolling while fishing for saltwater fish, the engine will suck in the salty water.

Saltwater is highly corrosive, especially to the moving parts within your boat motor. If you go out on saltwater and do not flush the engine before putting the boat up for the night, the water will dry within the motor, leaving the salt to eat away at the metal. So when you flush out the water, make sure you let it run for a few minutes. This will ensure that most of or all of the salt is washed away.

Flushing out your boat's inboard motor when necessary can help keep it running for its intended life. For more information about using a boat motor engine flush system, contact a business that offers these systems and speak with a representative to discuss your options.
